Downsize with Courage
On a recent vacation at a Bed and Breakfast my husband and I had coffee with a couple in the process of downsizing to a retirement home. They were overwhelmed with the sorting process and disappointed their children and grand children didn’t want anything. The solution, they proposed, was to put everything in storage and let the children deal with the mess after they died because it had become too emotionally draining to manage. If this story sounds familiar I implore you to reconsider the consequences of a decision like this. Closing out an estate is stressful and a burden to whoever is responsible. Would you want the last memory your child (or friend) has of you to be one of anger or resentment at having to clean up your mess? Your life is YOUR party. If you’re taking the time to plan it, make time to clean it up!
